What a fantastic day, wall to wall sunshine with temperatures approaching 20 degrees :) with very light winds it was time to pack a picnic and head off on our bikes. We had a relaxing start at home first and set off at midday, heading down to the shared space prom first which was very busy. We had to slowly weave through loads of people enjoying the warm sunshine with mirror flat seas and past several open water swimmers at The Fludgers. Back on the road to The Dip then we followed the coast path past the golf club meeting up with an old windsurfing mate Martin Hubbard and stopping briefly at Felixstowe Ferry jetty where a high tide made it perfect for crabbing but there was only one youngster having a go! We watched the Harbour master take a family out for a river trip before returning to the new path along the river which is now complete but rather disappointing as it's rough and bumpy - just not finished very well:(
Then it was several miles of bumpy River Deben path all the way past Ramsholt to Kirton creek where we had the pleasure of seeing 50 Avocets:) It was a good trip for wildlife as we saw a kingfisher, herons, egrets, swans, godwits, lapwings, pipits, a buzzard, a friendly robin, cormorants and a couple of squirrels:) The reflections at Kirton Creek were lovely which we stopped to take in before going to Hemley along one of our favourite paths. We found a fantastic pine lined bridle way which took us most of the way to Waldringfield, past a large county house and crossing crop fields with narrow paths.
At Waldringfield we stopped for our lunch, bread and soup which was delicious:) There was even a couple of blokes swimming in the river, one with no wetsuit on, I think I would pass on that. After a nice break we set off again only to discover Mag had a puncture:( I removed the inner tube but could not find a hole, I even got a bucket of water but no air bubbles in sight! I pumped it up and we set off again past the Maybush pub full of people having meals and back along the back lanes. Mag’s tyre was soon flat again, so I pumped it up again but it didn't last long so I had to take the inner tube out again. This time we found the hole, it was where I had repaired it in France and the patch had come away:( I stuck another one on and hoped that would get us home, we even had two offers of help from other cyclists who passed us:)
It's a long way up and down back to Felixstowe past Newbourne, Kirton and Trimley but we made it back after about 4.5 hours out covering 20 miles. An amazing day for late October, more like August:)
